Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy injections, also known as regenerative injection therapy and ligament re-constructive therapy, is permanent chronic joint pain treatment. Prolotherapy has been used for over 50 years and has an excellent record of success for curing chronic pain. At the Center for Integrated Medicine in Bend, our prolotherapy injections target the functionally insufficient or degenerated connective tissue by the precise injection of a mild irritant solution directly on the ligament or tendon creating a controlled inflammation that stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanisms to create new strengthened tissue. The previously injured tissue goes through the same healing cascade as when it was first injured and is given a second chance to heal. It may take several injections spaced at 1 to 3 week intervals to achieve a maximum result. A popular treatment from our clinic in Bend, Prolotherapy uses the body’s natural healing ability to relieve chronic joint pain, strengthen injured tissues, and restore function. The treatment is over 85% effective in most cases.

How does it work?
Ligaments hold bones together, while tendons, being somewhat like ligaments in structure, hold muscles to bones. Due to injury or repeated use, the ligaments or tendons may become torn, loose or stretched, resulting in pain, loss of strength and endurance, and possibly arthritic changes. Prolotherapy involves the injection of dextrose or other solutions into the lax or torn areas. This results in a migration of healing cells into the weakened area and the creation new strengthened tissues. The advantage of prolotherapy over other treatment options is that it generally results in normalization of joint biomechanics, less chance of re-injury, and life long pain elimination.
