When you think of relaxing massage, you’re probably picturing Swedish massage. A Swedish massage therapy session uses therapeutic oils and lotions along with a variety of strokes. As its name implies, the goal of deep tissue massage is to access the deeper layers of the body to reduce tension. To achieve that deep healing, the massage therapist may use her hands, knuckles and elbows to apply targeted pressure on the body’s trigger points. By working on trigger points, deep tissue massage is able to release areas of chronic stress caused by past injuries, repetitive motion and misalignment.
The Center for Integrated Medicine encourages massage clients to communicate openly with their massage therapist during a deep tissue massage therapy session to prevent excessive discomfort. It is normal to feel some soreness after deep tissue massage. Because the deep tissue work releases toxins from within the body, make sure to drink plenty of water before and after your session to help eliminate those toxins.
Pediatric massage helps reduce anxiety and relieve chronic pain in children of all ages. In a respectful, safe, nurturing environment, the massage therapist works with healthy children as well as with children with special health care needs.
