Active Release Techniques (ART)

Dr. Adam Hamilton and Dr. Payson Flattery are Central Oregon’s only full-body certified Chiropractic ART practitioners, having completed all modules, including the spine, upper extremity, and lower extremity.  Active Release Techniques, or ART for short, is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.  During ART treatment, abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.  These treatment protocols – over 500 specific moves – are unique to ART. They allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient.  ART is especially effective at treating overuse injuries.

Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:

  • acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc),
  • accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
  • not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia).

As such, athletes and physical laborers often gravitate toward it as a preferred treatment method.  ART is so effective that most professional and many collegiate sports teams have ART providers on staff.  ART also has a partnership with Ironman Triathlons, and Dr. Hamilton is part of the Ironman referral network.

ART is highly effective in treating the following conditions:

  • Tendonitis
  • Muscle strains
  • Headaches
  • Shoulder pain
  • Back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Knee problems
  • Shin splints
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tennis elbow
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

These conditions, and many others, are the result of scar tissue building up in the area of overuse. As the scar tissue grows with repeated overuse, it binds and impedes tissue that needs to have freedom of movement. Over time, muscles, tendons and nerves are adversely affected, causing pain, reduced motion and even muscle weakness.

The good news: If you’re suffering from these conditions, it’s not too late. Your pain and related issues can be effectively and permanently resolved with ART. Call the Center for Integrative Medicine today to make your appointment.
